In the film 'Chhinnamul', Sen searches for changing patterns in the Bengali filmmaking scenario. He criticizes the social melodramas as suffering from lack of serious thoughts and intellect. 'Chhinamul', for Sen, is a welcome change, long overdue in Begali cinema. Citing appraisals by Pudovkin and Chekasov, Sen analyses the film on the grounds of technique, narrative structure, the realist form and the its association with the IPTA.
